The foobar-online.com FAQ:

What is the purpose of this page?

When this page began it was my personal playground as a test of the true utility of Linux.  I was hosting it at my home on a server running RedHat Linux 6.2.  I recently moved, and switched to cable modem.  Unfortunately without a static IP address I couldn't really run a webserver reliably any longer.  I decided to move to a commercial service to host foobar-online.  I will post updates as they become available.

How can I setup my own Linux server?

1.)  Get a dedicated PC to run it on.  It's truly no fun to mess up your primary computer if you make a mistake and trust me, you will make mistakes.  My webserver was redone completely at least three times.

2.)  Download, or buy a distribution of Linux.  I am personally running RedHat 6.2, which is a very popular choice.  The install of 6.2 is so much easier than older versions.  RedHat finds and configures most peripherals without much assistance, which is a big bonus for newbies.  (Update:  I have upgraded to 7.0, and have not experienced any problems.  However since I'm not really hosting a website any longer, it's difficult to know how reliable it really is.)

3.)  If you want a web presence on your own server get a dedicated, preferrably high speed, connection.  I am using a DSL line from Concentric (now known as XO).  (See the DSL link above)  I am extremely happy with the service I have received from Concentric, and highly recommend them.  (Update:  XO no longer offers ADSL service, you can still get SDSL service from them at a much higher cost.  I would recommend SpeakEasy.net for affordable DSL.  I have had no personal experience with them, but I know people who do and have had very good luck.)

4.)  By default, RedHat should install Apache Web Server.  If it is not installed you can add it by using the RedHat Package Manager (RPM), or download the source files and compile them yourself.  You can also add Front Page extensions to your Linux server, so you can use Microsoft Front Page.

5.)  If you want your own mail server download Qmail, and Life With Qmail.  This is a very secure, very powerful mail server.  I am currently running Qmail 1.03 for my domain foobar-online.com.  (Update:  Once again cable modems don't make for very reliable connections due to dynamic IP addresses, and I'm now using a commercial service to host my email.)

6.)  Now that you have a working server and DSL with a static IP address, you are ready for the next step.  You must register a domain name.  Check out Internic's web site.  You will find a list of Registrars, who can help you register your domain name.  The Registrars are competing companies, and prices do vary so shop around before you lay out any money.  The going rate is around $35.00 a year, with a 2 year minimum.

7.)  Send me an email, and let me know how it went!!
